The frightening power of the media...reminds me of the winning-shot of a Vietnamese general excuting a looter by gunpoint during the Vietnam War.

why didn't the photographer carry the kid to the camp?

you might as well ask why did the photographer commit suicide? shrugs. welcome to the world. maybe he didn't feel the need to. maybe he had better photos to take. lol.

ya, y did the photographer commit suicide?

i guess the photographer commited suicide partly because of guilt for not helping the child and due to the pressure from the society. I felt that he should take the photo and help the child there if he was capable to do so.

I got that as a comprehension passage Secondary 2.

yeah, i agree. i think it might be partly cos of guilt. i mean, i would commit suicide too knowing that i had let a child die AND also, the very fact that the photo received worldwide recognition and attention probably didn't help matters much.

can u imagine seeing the object of your guilt being shoved up to your face everywhere u turn? i'ld probably go as insane as Lear.

hey miao! haha yar i rmb reading smthing abt this photographer before from eng comprehension... apparently, he was so tortured by guilt after receiving the price because many ppl started questioning him what happened to e child after he took e photo... yar... depression... sad guy... sad kid too
i think it's just a photographer's mentality.... to just take a pict of nature e way it is...

extract frm website:

Carter's winning photo shows a heart-breaking scene of a starving child collapsed on the ground, struggling to get to a food center during a famine in the Sudan in 1993. In the background, a vulture stalks the emaciated child.

Carter was part of a group of four fearless photojournalists known as the "Bang Bang Club" who traveled throughout South Africa capturing the atrocities committed during apartheid.

Haunted by the horrific images from Sudan, Carter committed suicide in 1994 soon after receiving the award.

hohoho... some more info

Seeking relief from the sight of masses of people starving to death, he wandered into the open bush. He heard a soft, high-pitched whimpering and saw a tiny girl trying to make her way to the feeding center. As he crouched to photograph her, a vulture landed in view. Careful not to disturb the bird, he positioned himself for the best possible image. He would later say he waited about 20 minutes, hoping the vulture would spread its wings. It did not, and after he took his photographs, he chased the bird away and watched as the little girl resumed her struggle. Afterward he sat under a tree, lit a cigarette, talked to God and cried. "He was depressed afterward," Silva recalls. "He kept saying he wanted to hug his daughter."
